American Nettings Deer & Poultry Fencing is a strong, medium-weight plastic 17.5 x 28.5 mm (11/16 x 1-1/8 in) mesh that is a long-lasting alternative to wire. Plastic deer fencing and plastic poultry fencing is cost effective, does not rust or rot, resists most chemicals and acids, and offers a better appearance by blending in with surroundings. No sharp edges to snag clothing or cut hands, reducing the risk of tetanus and other infections. Other uses include containing blowing debris in landfill sites, temporary fencing, and bird control.
Plastic Deer Fencing vs. Electric or Metal Wire Deer Fence
Many are deceived in thinking that plastic deer fencing is not an efficient form of deer control. On the contrary, it is more economical, humane, and requires less maintenance. And here is why:
Electric fencing:
- Physically shocks the approaching deer, which many gardeners have issues with.
- Deer have been known to jump electric fences cleanly.
- Expensive form of control with high maintenance fees.
Metal wire fencing:
- Rusts and therefore has a shorter life expectancy and requires more maintenance.
- Can tear clothing or cut skin, with heightened risk of tetanus or other infections.
Deer Fencing acts as more of a visual barrier than a physical obstacle, therefore it is not necessary to use heavy poles. Use a minimum of 1-1/2″ diameter post and install every 10-12 feet. Make sure the end posts and any corner posts are well secured. Fasten fencing to one post and pull moderately taut while securing to adjacent posts. For wood posts, sandwich the fencing with a wood lath or rubber hose to prevent nails or staples from eating through. Do not use wire to fasten to metal posts. Colored ribbon may be tied to fence at intervals to flutter in a breeze. Continue procedure for additional poles.
For Poultry
Building a cage for poultry requires a sturdy structure. We recommend putting posts at 2.4-3 m (8-10 ft) intervals. Dig a 15-30 cm (6-12 in) deep trench along the fence line (inside of posts), to prevent burrowing. Fasten netting to the inside of the posts, pulling taut, using method described above.
